Pet-Friendly Beaches Near Sarasota: The Actual List
Dogs are welcome at several beaches near Sarasota, but almost none of the prime spots on Siesta Key or Lido allow them. Your best options are Brohard Paw Park in Venice, North Jetty Park in Nokomis, and Rothenbach Park for off-leash swimming — with strict leash and bag rules everywhere else.
TL;DR: Siesta Key Beach bans dogs year-round. Venice's Brohard Paw Park is the closest true dog beach. North Jetty Park (Nokomis) is the local secret. Leashes required at almost every other spot. Pick up or face a $500 fine.
Where Are Dogs Actually Allowed on Sarasota-Area Beaches?
Most of what you read online is vague. Here's the ground truth, beach by beach.
1. Brohard Paw Park — Venice (1600 Harbor Drive S, Venice, FL 34285) This is the real one. Sarasota County maintains a fenced, off-leash beach section specifically for dogs. There's a freshwater rinse station, waste bags, and a small parking lot that fills by 9 a.m. on weekends. The fee is $5 for parking. The dog beach area is south of the main Brohard Beach entrance — follow the signs past the fishing pier. Water is typically calm here, which matters if your dog isn't a strong swimmer. Open sunrise to sunset. This is the place people mean when they say "dog beach near Sarasota."
2. North Jetty Park — Nokomis (1000 Albee Road S, Nokomis, FL 34275) Locals know this one. Dogs on leash are permitted on the beach here, and the vibe is much more relaxed than the crowded county parks further north. Parking is free. The beach sits at the southern mouth of Venice Inlet, so you get boat traffic, pelicans, and some of the best people-watching (and dog-watching) on the coast. Leash must be 6 feet or shorter. The water gets choppy near the jetty rocks — keep dogs away from that end.
3. Dona Bay / Curry Creek Preserve — Osprey Not a traditional beach, but Dona Bay access points off Blackburn Point Road allow leashed dogs near the water. It's brackish, not Gulf, and more of a kayak-launch vibe. Good if you want quiet and shade. No fee.
4. Caspersen Beach — Venice (4100 Harbor Drive S, Venice, FL 34285) Just south of Brohard, Caspersen is Venice's least-developed beach — good for fossil hunting (shark teeth wash up constantly here). Dogs on leash are allowed. No concessions, minimal facilities, free parking. This is a long, quiet stretch. Watch the tide; the beach narrows significantly at high water.
5. Rothenbach Park — Sarasota (8650 Midnight Pass Road, Sarasota, FL 34242) Technically not a Gulf beach — it's an off-leash dog park with a pond for swimming. But it's on Siesta Key Road, so people lump it in with beach options. The pond is murky and beloved by labs everywhere. Free to enter, open 7 a.m. to dusk. Parking is a small lot off Midnight Pass Road.
Where Dogs Are NOT Allowed (Don't Learn This the Hard Way)
Siesta Key Beach: No dogs, full stop, year-round. Sarasota County Code 86-162 is enforced. Rangers ticket. The fine starts at $100 and can run higher with repeat offenses. Don't try the "I didn't see a sign" move — there are signs at every access point.
Lido Key Beach: Also prohibited. Same county ordinance. Lido's Beach Café and the concession stands don't want it, and the crowds there make it a bad idea anyway.
Turtle Beach (Siesta Key south end): No dogs. Despite being quieter and less policed, the prohibition applies. Sea turtle nesting activity along this stretch is one reason the rule exists — Florida Fish and Wildlife takes nesting season seriously from May through October.
Nokomis Beach (main section): The main swimming beach at Nokomis prohibits dogs. North Jetty Park nearby is your alternative (see above).
What Are the Leash Rules at Sarasota County Beaches?
Anywhere dogs are permitted on county beaches outside a designated off-leash area, the leash must be 6 feet or shorter. Retractable leashes are technically allowed, but rangers have discretion. If your 25-foot retractable is fully extended and your dog is near other swimmers, expect a conversation.
Off-leash areas at Brohard Paw Park require your dog to be current on rabies vaccination. The county doesn't check at the gate, but if there's an incident and your dog isn't vaccinated, you're liable. Bring proof if your dog is reactive or you want zero stress.
Cleanup is mandatory under Sarasota County ordinance. Fine is $500 for failure to remove waste. Bags are usually stocked at dispensers near Brohard and North Jetty, but bring your own as backup — the dispensers run out on busy weekends.

When Is the Best Time to Take Your Dog to the Beach Near Sarasota?
October through April is the window. Here's why:
- Heat: Gulf Coast sand in July can exceed 140°F surface temperature. Dogs burn paw pads. If you can't hold your hand on the sand for five seconds, your dog shouldn't walk on it without booties.
- Crowds: Brohard Paw Park is genuinely crowded from late December through March with snowbird dogs and their owners. Go early — before 9 a.m. — if you want elbow room.
- Sea turtle nesting: Florida's nesting season runs May 1 through October 31. This affects beach restoration and access in some areas, though Brohard and North Jetty remain open. Mote Marine Laboratory, headquartered right here in Sarasota at 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway, runs the local sea turtle monitoring program. Their guidance shapes how county beaches handle nesting corridor protection.
- Red tide: When red tide hits, it affects dogs too. Karenia brevis toxins cause respiratory irritation and can be dangerous if dogs drink Gulf water during a bloom. Check the Florida Fish and Wildlife Red Tide Status Map before you go. FWC updates it daily during active events.
What to Bring for a Dog Day at a Sarasota-Area Beach
This isn't a gear ad — it's a checklist from watching unprepared people at Brohard every winter.
- Fresh water (dogs don't self-regulate Gulf water intake well)
- Collapsible bowl
- Your own waste bags (doubles)
- Proof of rabies vaccination (Brohard technically requires it)
- Dog sunscreen if your dog has a pink nose or thin coat — it exists, it matters
- Towel (the ride home will thank you)
- Long leash for transition areas between parking lot and dog beach
Plan Your Dog-Friendly Sarasota Trip
If you're staying at a Beach Plus property, ask us about pet-friendly rentals before you book — availability changes, and pet fees vary by property. Most of our Venice-area homes are closest to Brohard Paw Park and Caspersen, which is intentional.
North Jetty is 10 minutes from most Nokomis and Osprey rentals. If you're set on a Siesta Key address, Rothenbach Park is your nearest off-leash option and honestly a good one for mellow dogs who prefer a pond to surf.
Check Sarasota County's beach rules page before your trip — regulations have shifted before and may shift again. And check the FWC red tide map the morning you go. We do.
