Sarasota December Events & Holiday Lights 2026

By Beach Plus Local Desk·September 1, 2026·5 min read

Sarasota's best December holiday lights and events run from the Boat Parade on Sarasota Bay to the luminaries lining St. Armands Circle — and most of them are free or under $20 a person.

TL;DR: Skip the mall. Downtown Sarasota, St. Armands Circle, and the bayfront are where December actually happens here. The big dates cluster around the first two weekends of the month. Plan around those.

Where Are the Best Holiday Lights in Sarasota?

The short answer: St. Armands Circle and Bayfront Park. Both are walkable, both are free to visit, and both look genuinely good at night without being the kind of over-produced LED spectacle you'd find at a theme park.

St. Armands Circle (St. Armands Circle, Lido Key, FL 34236) goes up with lights in late November and stays decorated through New Year's. The palms along the circle get wrapped in warm white lights. The storefronts — C'est La Vie, Kilwin's, Epicure Café — put up their own displays. It's worth walking after dinner rather than before, when the crowd thins and the lights actually pop against the dark sky.

Bayfront Park (Bayfront Drive, downtown Sarasota) hosts the City's official holiday tree. The lighting ceremony typically falls on the first Friday of December. Get there early — parking on U.S. 41 along the bayfront fills up fast, and the Sarasota County garages on Lemon Avenue are your best backup option (usually $1/hour evenings).

Sarasota Square and Nathan Benderson Park are secondary options. Benderson (5851 Nathan Benderson Circle, University area) sometimes organizes community light walks around the rowing lake in December — worth checking their events calendar closer to the date.

When Is the Sarasota Holiday Boat Parade?

The Sarasota Holiday Boat Parade runs on Sarasota Bay, typically the second Saturday of December, starting around 6:30 p.m. Decorated boats — some with full light rigs, some with just a string of bulbs and a inflatable Santa — depart from Marina Jack (2 Marina Plaza, downtown Sarasota) and parade south along the waterfront.

Best free viewing spots, in order of how good they actually are:

  1. Bayfront Park lawn — wide open sightlines, bring a blanket
  2. Marina Jack's upper deck — elevated, but gets packed; arrive 45 minutes early
  3. Island Park (south of Marina Jack, off Mound Street) — less crowded, solid view
  4. The Ringling Causeway — you can see boats passing beneath, which is a different angle worth trying once

The parade is put on by the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. Their website posts the official route and entry list for registered boats. In recent years, 30 to 50 boats have participated. The whole thing takes about 90 minutes to pass a fixed point.

What Holiday Events Are Worth Attending in Downtown Sarasota?

Here's a ranked breakdown based on what locals actually go back to year after year:

Event Location Typical Date Cost
Downtown Holiday Tree Lighting Bayfront Park First Friday of December Free
Holiday Boat Parade Sarasota Bay / Marina Jack Second Saturday of December Free
St. Armands Holiday Stroll St. Armands Circle Ongoing, weekends in December Free
Sarasota Ballet Nutcracker FSU Center for the Performing Arts Early–mid December $30–$85
Selby Gardens Holiday Lights Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Select December evenings $20–$30
Midnight Pass Road Holiday Run Siesta Key Mid-December (varies) Free/Charity entry

The Sarasota Ballet's Nutcracker at the FSU Ringling Center for the Cultural Arts (5401 Bay Shore Road) is the local tradition that holds up. Tickets sell out. Buy them in October if you can. The company is genuinely good — this isn't a school recital.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens (900 S. Palm Avenue, downtown Sarasota) does evening holiday light events that are worth the admission. The botanical setting — especially the banyan grove — makes it different from every other holiday light walk you've done. Check selby.org for this year's schedule and book online. They cap attendance.

Is There Anything Happening on Siesta Key in December?

Siesta Key is quieter in December than in spring or summer, which is honestly part of the appeal. The beach itself is still beautiful — water temps are in the low 70s, crowds are manageable, and you can actually get a parking spot at Siesta Key Beach (948 Beach Road) without circling for 30 minutes.

The Siesta Key Village (Old Stickney Point Road area) puts up some decorations, and the bars and restaurants do their own events. Daiquiri Deck and Siesta Key Oyster Bar both run holiday specials. Nothing formally organized like the downtown boat parade — it's more of a stroll-and-drink situation, which some people prefer.

One thing that does happen on Siesta Key: the Siesta Key Drum Circle continues every Sunday at sunset, including in December. It's free. It's on the main beach near the pavilion. It's a real Sarasota thing that visitors either love immediately or don't know what to make of. Worth seeing once.

How Do I Get Around Sarasota During December Events?

Parking downtown during the boat parade or the tree lighting is a genuine headache. Here's what works:

  • Sarasota County garage on Lemon Avenue (1330 1st St) — best option, walkable to Bayfront Park
  • Surface lots off Pineapple Avenue — less convenient but usually have space
  • SunSational trolley — the free downtown trolley runs on a loop through downtown and Rosemary District; check SarasotaCounty.gov for the December schedule
  • Rideshare drop-off — Uber and Lyft work fine downtown; pick-up after the parade takes 10–15 minutes, plan for it

Siesta Key gets backed up on Midnight Pass Road and Stickney Point Road any weekend in December. If you're staying on the key, just walk. If you're driving from the mainland, go before 5 p.m. or after 9 p.m.
